Dear Friends of the WSO,
Welcome to the exciting 2018-19 season, celebrating 70 years of bringing memorable music and beauty to Wellesley and its surrounding communities. Founded as the Wellesley Community Orchestra in 1948 by two Wellesley residents, Rolland Tapley and Mrs. William H. Vogel, the Orchestra played in various locations in Wellesley, Framingham and Littleton before settling into our current home at MassBay Community College. We are in our 35 th season at this special school, which is always supportive of the WSO.
The WSO is a regional, rather than local, orchestra, with players coming from 35 different communities. They come for the opportunity to play under Music Director/Conductor Max Hobart, a long-time member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and to make incredible music together. I have heard audience members, upon leaving one of our concerts, say they don’t need to go into Boston to hear fine orchestral music when they have the WSO in their back yard! And parking is plentiful and easy! It has been called a “jewel in our midst.” It is, indeed, that precious!
Our mission is “to offer inspiring performances, to create opportunities for emergingand establishedsoloists, to commission and premiere works by livingcomposers, to collaborate with local schools and community organizations, and to create a musical community for volunteer instrumentalists of the highest caliber.”
Our Young Soloist competition, “Two Front Teeth” contest, Family Concert and collaboration with Wellesley Middle and High School musicians contribute to the fulfillment of this mission. We could not accomplish this, however, were it not for MassBay, financial support from local and regional businesses, grant support from local cultural councils and organizations, donations by local merchants, and the generosity of people like you. Thank you!
2018-19 promises to be really special, in honor of our 70-year milestone. Do read Max’s letter and study the music offered on our six concerts. The May performance of Beethoven’s 9 th Symphony promises to be a fitting conclusion to a magnificent season. Our soloists are amazingly accomplished, as usual. Remember, by purchasing a subscription you receive ONE CONCERT FREE. New subscribers receive ONE SUBSCRIPTION free.
I’ll share my knowledge of the music and composers at the 2:15 pre-concert talks before subscription concerts. Do come! We all learn a lot.
I look forward to seeing you throughout the season!
